Worship at St. Giles

Lay Worship Activities

You have many ways to take part in our worship life at St. Giles. Here are a few, along with a brief description of each.

Acolytes

The ministry of acolytes is one of the oldest in the Church, dating to the earliest years, and is open to both children and adults. Acolytes are responsible for lighting candles, carrying the processional cross or torches in procession, serving the elements to the Celebrant at the Eucharist, and serving the clergy and staff in whatever way may be required. Training is sessions are held periodically. Contact the Church Office or the Rector.

Altar Guild

Altar Guild work is a privilege and honor. We are the "arm of the priest" (or perhaps more like the stage crew). Duties of the Altar Guild include setting up for Eucharistic celebrations on Sundays and other days when services are scheduled; cleaning up after the service; laundering altar linens, and caring for clergy vestments. Through our work we come to feel the real presence of God more strongly, and this sets our duties as something apart from our busy lives.

Lay Readers / Chalice Bearers

Our Lay Reader / Chalice Bearer group is composed of dedicated people who have a record of faithful participation in all our Sunday liturgies and numerous special services, events and Holy Days.

This group assists in the liturgy by reading lessons, leading prayers and assisting at the Lord's Table during Holy Eucharist. As with acolytes, training sessions are held periodically. The Church considers this such an important ministry that those participating are licensed by the diocesan bishop. Those interested in this ministry are asked to speak with the Rector.

Ushers

Ushering is a way to serve the Lord and to participate actively in the functioning of St. Giles. The role of the usher frequently may be underestimated for its importance, but think back to when you first attended a new church -- probably one of the ushers had some impact on you and your family. A positive experience from an usher may have led you to join that church.

Ushers greet worshippers as they arrive, pass out service leaflets, and help guide the congregation when coming forward for communion. They also collect the offering and tidy up the pews after the service.
