Outreach Commission
The Outreach Commission is responsible for selecting organizations to receive financial gifts of the parish. We select organizations that support Episcopal agencies, agencies that serve our community, and agencies which are supported by members of our parish community.
Each year we collect food and clothing for St. Augustine's Indian Center in Chicago as our "40 Bags for 40 Days" Lenten giving. We sponsor two missionaries in Africa and Central America and usually have a Sunday designated to gather funds for their support. We sponsor the African Team Ministries Craft Fair during two Sundays in Advent. We participate in Church World Services Blanket Sunday and St. Giles' parishioners are instrumental in the organization of the ecumenical Glenview/Northbrook CROP Walk each October.
Parishioners deliver food three times each week from Sunset Foods, Starbucks, and local bakeries to three "soup kitchens" in Chicago. Good News Partners, Sts. George and Mathias, and Reba Place all receive these gifts. Additionally, food is collected throughout the year (via a basket in the Narthex) so that parishioners may conveniently help supply the Northfield Township Food Pantry. During the Christmas season, many members of our parish participate in the Cathedral Shelter Holiday Gift Basket program as a way to share with those less fortunate. We continue our long-time relationship with St. Gregory's School in Chicago, adding to our monetary support with a collection of new school supplies, donated by our parishioners, for the students there.
In addition to a hired cleaning crew, several parishioners help clean our church. Money which might otherwise be spent on the outside service is then donated to local charities. It's actually a great way for families and friends to work together in the church in a purposeful way. Additionally, three times per year, parishioners volunteer to pick up trash along our Walters Avenue parkways from Sanders to Pfingsten.
The Outreach Commission is grateful for each and every member of our parish who has helped in our efforts. Should you have questions or wish to volunteer to help serve our various communities, please contact Cindy Conrad, Outreach Commission Chair.
