St. Giles Hunger Project goes after goal number one
The Millennium Development Goals, agreed to by the nations of the world as a target for 2015, start with eliminating hunger and poverty. St. Giles is going after goal number one, starting in our own back yard.
The St. Giles Hunger project brings together churches, food providers and organizations that serve the needy around the Chicago area.
- Food pantry and soup kitchen organizations have many needs, including food, paper goods and toiletries, shelving, assistance.
- Grocery stores, bakeries and other food providers often have surplus goods.
- Churches can provide the link between these two, picking up and delivering, communicating needs, organizing volunteers.
St. Giles Episcopal Church has been providing this kind of link for 25 years. It's time to share the formula with our neighboring communities.
On August 9, St. Giles welcomed 16 church leaders from around the area for a formal project kickoff. Senior Warden Dan Jariabka gave the history of the project and outlined the concept. Ron Bernardi explained how Sunset Foods has been involved and how donors should be approached. Marylyn Pagan-Banks from the Good News Community Kitchen spoke, noting that her organization will feed anyone, but their real goal is to help lift people out of poverty.
You can help in many ways, including driving goods from donor to provider, writing letters or making phone calls, and organizing volunteers. Contact Dan Jariabka through the church office to find out how you fit in on this important project.
...done that, bought the t-shirt?
There may still be some St. Giles Hunger Project t-shirts available. Contact the church office for information.
